Learn About the Countries: Thailand Exchange Program
 

Thailand is located in Southeast Asia on the Malaysian Peninsula on the Indian Ocean and is the size of Arizona and Utah combined. Its neighbors are Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. Its 600 million plus population enjoys a tropical climate with November through February being cool, with the rest of the year hot and humid. Thailand boasts the most beautiful beaches in the world with rich tropical forests and mountains and fertile valleys. Thailand’s history spans four thousand years with links to China. It is a constitutional monarchy where the King is the head of the government. 95 percent of the population practice Buddhism.

  • Central Thai is the official language with many dialects.
  • A Thai characteristic of the general feeling that life should be enjoyed for the moment - problems and setback should not be taken seriously.
  • The King and Queen are the most respected persons in Thailand and to make jokes about or show disrespect would be considered offensive.



The culture is completely different from that of the US. “Culture shock” should be expected. Learning the Thai alphabet and pronunciation is very difficult. Also, the idea of Face, the way you present yourself publicly and how that affects your friends and host families is a difficult concept for many Americans to understand. Thailand is a developing nation.
