India is an ancient land with a continuous civilization of 5000 years. The British ruled the country from the 17th century until India declared Independence on August 15, 1947. It adopted a parliamentary system of government with a union of states. The country has been divided into 25 States and 7 Union Territories. One of the world's most famous early leaders with Mahatma Gandhi known for speaking the truth and advocating non-violence. India's first Prime Minister was Nehru.

- India's official language is Hindi. There are however, fifteen national languages recognized by the Indian constitution and these are spoken in over 1600 dialects. English is the official working language of the country and for those Indians who are multi-lingual, English is the most often spoken as the second language.
- Try to imagine a country that is one-fourth the size of the U.S. with over three times as many people. One of the most unique aspects of the country is its diversity in terms of people, language, customs, geography, and culture. You can travel one hour away in the country and feel as if you have crossed a national border. You will be faced with completely different languages, customs, points of view, and terrain. Without leaving the country, you have a staggering number of choices of where to visit - tropical forests, sandy beaches, rugged mountain terrain in the north, and deserts.
