The 2nd largest economy in the world, Germany's regions are sharply defined and maintain their distinctive character, each with it's own dialect, traditional dress and foods (and it's own way of defining homeland, or heimet ). Though "reunification" seemed to be the defining word of the decade, history may judge that Germany is, despite it's aspirations, a political union of very different cultures. And therein may be the secret of it's attraction.

- High German is the official language, many dialects are also spoken.
- Old in Germany may have a different meaning for Americans, as German cities have been in place for centuries. You will see homes, buildings, schools and castles that have not changed in hundreds of years
