Chile is a Spanish-speaking country located in South America with a predominantly temperate climate. The terrain is very diverse with desert in the north, the central region being Mediterranean and the south being cool and damp. There are low coastal mountains, fertile central valleys, the Pacific Ocean on the west and rugged Andes in the east. Chile has one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America. It is a leading producer of copper and Chilean wine is world-renowned. In the 1990's people saw Chile return to democratic rule after 16 years of military dictatorship headed by General Augusto Pinochet. The dominant religion is Catholic. Families are very important to the people of Chile, with the extended family being a major part of this.
